ACTIVITY:
Forest & Land Scotland built a new track from Merkland through to Corrie, extending as far as the Goatfell main track. This enables an off-road route from the Castle drive all the way to Corrie.
The connection route at the Corrie end of this route was eroded and poorly drained with sections of heavy clay and gullies forming down the track. Some sections of the path are very steep, especially now the new track has been made. The aim of this project was to reduce the gradient of the track by building some new sections and swinging the path further out into the forest. Drainage will also be improved to reduce the erosion of the path surface.
OUTCOME:
This was a partnership project between Arran Bike Club, Arran Access Trust, NTS Arran Ranger Service and Forestry & Land Scotland. This collaborative work has contributed to making an off-road route between Brodick and Corrie that is attractive to users, so reducing the number of walkers and cyclists on the hazardous road sections. It has improved the route's accessibility by reducing the gradient and improving drainage.
